Treatment options for insomnia and medication for better sleep

-Sleeping medications – Treating insomnia involves many modalities. These include sleep study, sleep hygiene, and medication, such as Z drugs and benzodiazepines. However, other medications can also be prescribed for sleep problems such as antidepressants, although some, especially benzodiazepines, may cause addiction. Treating excessive daytime sleepiness is another important and problematic issue for many patients. Treating excessive daytime sleepiness may involve medication as well as nonpharmacological treatments such as relaxation training, stimulus control therapy, sleep restriction therapy, intensive sleep retraining, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Patients coming to Dr. Wegierek for medication management for insomnia and/or hypersomnia or narcolepsy should expect that they will be referred to their primary care physician and/or neurologist for collaborative treatment.

At both locations, we offer medications, psychotherapy, as well as teach sleep hygiene.

This is a very difficult question as, for each patient, different treatment modalities are recommended. To answer this difficult question, the patient that reports having sleep difficulties undergoes a thorough evaluation. Usually, initial evaluation, provided by our clinicians, renders solid recommendations not only for psychotherapy, sleep study, but also medication recommendations.

Both psychotherapy as well as medication therapy is a gold standard for treatment of sleep disorders. Many of our patients benefit from both.
